Docomomo Tours In Palm Springs (and across the country)

If you’ve never seen Richard Neutra’s Kaufmann House or Albert Frey’s Palm Springs City Hall, now is your chance. This weekend Docomomo is hosing Palm Springs architecture tours, which will show off some of the city’s most famous architecture. The tours, which also include visits to the homes of Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, and Cary Grant, are part of Docomomo’s US Tour Day, which offers similar events across the country, in 22 states. These includes tours of the Farnsworth House in Illinois, Eero Saarinen’s TWA Terminal in New York, and buildings by Felix Candela in Houston.
Paola Antonelli Named Director of Research & Development at MoMA

The MoMA’s Senior Art Curator of Architecture and Design, Paola Antonelli, was named Director of Research & Development this week by the museum’s Director Glenn D. Lowry. This new role is a mix of curatorial, design, and research, and was created as part of an effort to discover new prospects in the rapidly developing digital world.

Not long after the Detroit Design Festival, Detroit’s design enthusiasts have another event to celebrate: DLECTRICITY begins today and runs through Saturday.
The “contemporary light art festival” features 35 local, national, and international artists who will illuminate historic structures in Midtown Detroit. Buildings including the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Michigan Science Center, and the Detroit Public Library will become canvases for 3D video mapping, laser displays, and light sculptures.

The Enigmatic Egg-Shaped Cube at The Festival of Lively Architecture

A materially simple yet structurally complex pavilion welcomed visitors to an international architectural competition that took over Montpelier’s 16th-century French hotels.
For the seventh annual Festival des Architectures Vives, or the Festival of Lively Architecture, held this year in Montpelier, France, design studio Atelier Vecteur (AV) was asked to create a pavilion to welcome visitors to the city-wide outdoor installation competition. This year 11 international architecture teams were each assigned a courtyard in one of Montpelier’s many historic hotels. Dating back to the 16th-century, these quiet, private spaces act like refuges from the city streets. They also offered the competing teams a unique venue for their site-specific installations as well as a challenge to come up with the best use of the interior outdoor space. AV was assigned the 18th-century Hôtel Saint-Côme, a former center for medical study and practice funded by Louis XV’s surgeon, who used it until it closed in 1792 during the French Revolution.

Residents of Barcelona had the opportunity to see Antoni Gaudi’s 120-year-old La Sagrada Familia in a new light recently as Montreal-based media studio and light artists Moment Factory projection mapped a multimedia display over the cathedral’s facade. While Gaudi’s signature stone carvings portraying dripping stone, fanciful plant forms, and intricate religious displays in their normally sand-colored hue are usually enough to dazzle the viewers eye, the gaudy splash provided one psychedelic experience.
Tour Top Design Offices With Open House New York

This year is Open House New York‘s 10th anniversary year for tours of spaces that are private or off limits to the public. Every year some of the most popular tours are those of New York architects offices. This year is no exception and OHNY has opened up some very special work spaces: Linda Pollack and Sandro Marpillero’s spectacular live/work loft in Tribeca, Caples Jefferson architects, ARO’s downtown space and Paul Rudolph’s Modulightor office in Midtown. Even as Berlin loses green space, the city remains Europe’s greenest with more than 400,000 trees. One of the grandest, a 100-year-old chestnut tree towering over Montbijoupark, was the center of Tree Concert, a public art project that took place in September to bring light, literally, to the city’s diminishing greenery with a glowing LED sculpture circling the trees trunk.
A+D Showcases the Secret Life of Saarinen in New Exhibition

LA’s A+D Architecture and Design Museum is presenting Eero Saarinen: A Reputation For Innovation, which opens tomorrow night. The show will highlight one of the world’s most heralded mid-century architects, who designed, among other things, the St. Louis Gateway Arch, the TWA Terminal at JFK in New York, Dulles Airport in Washington D.C., and the Entenza House in Los Angeles. Saarinen was also a renowned product designer, and, unbeknownst to most, an employee for the OSS (the precursor to the CIA), where he learned many of his design techniques. The show will explore this under-documented phase of his career and bring to light a designer whose influence still resonates today. Tonight! Open Outcry Furniture Reception in Manhattan
American conceptual artist Mary Ellen Carroll (MEC, design studios) and the British architect Simon Dance (Simon Dance Design) are throwing a party this evening in New York to celebrate Open Outcry Furniture, a new sculptural seating arrangement that can be configured in a variety of shapes and forms. Join the designers at the R 20th Century Gallery at 82 Franklin Street between 6 and 8:00p.m. for the opening reception.
PROFILE> Alphonso Peluso puts Revit into Parametric Overdrive

Alphonso Peluso, Director of Digital Architecture + Fabrication at the Illinois Institute of Technology, is on a mission to max out Revit. His workshop, “Revit Parametric Facade Design,” on October 12 offers participants a hands-on lab for exploring how the program can help produce the most complex building skins. “It’s a unique opportunity to experiment in one session with all the different tools Revit has for creating parametric facades,” said Peluso. The event is part of Collaboration: The Art and Science of Building Facades, the Chicago edition of the Architect’s Newspaper‘s conference taking place October 11 and 12.
Using a series of tutorials Peluso will begin by looking at basic curtain wall creation through deploying system families and also making custom parametric families. Next up: mining the Conceptual Massing interface that yields complex parametric facade forms. Then on to pattern, from basic to advanced and responsive. Finally, Revit’s Adaptive Component families will be explored for the creation of ”one off ” building components. “The participant will walk away with the knowledge of which tool is most appropriate for the different types of facades they are designing,” said Peluso.
Lights, Camera, Diller, Scofidio + Renfro
This weekend’s Open House New York tours and special building openings will end with a special film screening at Tribeca Cinema. The screening will feature a new Checkerboard Foundation Production of Diller, Scofidio + Renfro that highlights the local firm’s two most important projects: The High Line and Lincoln Center.
Checkerboard is well known for their architecture documentaries and this one features DS+R’s recent contributions to New York’s streetscape. The film starts at 7:00 on Sunday and tickets can be purchased in advance.
