Here are some exciting upcoming competitions that will be sure to present you with the type of challenge you’ve been waiting for. AN‘s editors have combed through our online listing of architecture and design competitions to bring you five of the most interesting competitions happening right now. Reimagine the Astrodome. To launch The Architect’s Newspaper’s Southwest edition and to kick-off YKK AP’s expansion in the region, AN and YKK AP are hosting an Astrodome Reuse Design Ideas Competition. Architects, artists, designers, and students from the city of Houston, the state of Texas, and across America are invited to submit their concepts on how the Astrodome might be reimagined, repurposed, and reused. First place will receive $2,500, second and third place will receive $1,000 each, and two honorable mentions will each receive $250. The top three and two honorable mentions will be published in print in AN’s inaugural Southwest edition. The registration deadline has been extended to Monday, September 23.

Place from Space. Place from Space is a design competition that explores the transformation of vacant lots in Cincinnati, Ohio into community spaces. With the goal of activating underutilized spaces to energize communities, design proposals should bring value to the neighborhood and create a sense of place, be creative and encourage community interaction, and should consider environmental impact by focusing on the deconstruction plan, re-use of materials, and productive elements of the design. The competition takes place in two parts, and the grand prize winner’s design will be constructed in 2014.

Submission Deadline: September 29, 2013.

QueensWay Connection: Elevating the Public Realm. The Emerging New York Architects committee has announced its sixth biennial ideas competition. QueensWay Connection supports Friends of the QueensWay and the Trust for Public Land in their attempts to revitalize an abandoned elevated railway and turn it into a greenway. The competition, which is looking to supplement the ongoing feasibility study by offering ways the park can be activated and turned into a viable green space, is open to design students and professionals who have completed their education within the past 10 years. Cash prizes of up to $5,000 will be awarded.

Submission Deadline: January 1, 2014.

The Eco-Porn Competition. To investigate tropes in architectural representation, Reality Cues is conducting a competition series exploring the techniques and conventions architects depend on to convey space, form, and use. The first competition of the series is called Eco-Porn. For some, the issue of sustainability has generated resourceful design, but for others has created a pressure to make architecture merely seem green. The competition aims to uncover if there is value in this deception. Three cash prizes will be awarded and the bonus round winner will receive a 6-foot tall inflatable palm tree cooler. All winners and honorable mentions will be included in Reality Cues’ premier issue of Tropes.

CLOG: MIAMI / Call for Submissions. Miami, the southeastern United States’ largest city, has been subject to natural, political, and cultural forces that have brought both booms and busts. Notwithstanding setbacks, Miami has become an animated, largely American cosmopolitan city. CLOG : MIAMI is seeking original contributions in the form of images, graphics, diagrams, and/or text that effectively communicate ideas about architecture in Miami. CLOG investigates a specific subject matter particularly pertinent to contemporary architecture from various viewpoints and through an array of methods.

Activate Union Station. While Chicago’s Union Station is an iconic building and an important transport center, it has much more potential. The Metropolitan Planning Council’s Fifth Annual Placemaking Contest is awarding cash prizes of $5,000 to the top temporary ideas that transform three specific sites within the space into a gathering place for West Loop residents and an attraction for tourists. Two winners will have the opportunity to implement their designs for 10 days this summer, between August 24 and September 3, 2013.

Skin Digital Fabrication Competition. TEX-FAB has launched the 2013 SKIN Competition. The international, two-stage digital fabrication competition invites architect, designers, and researchers to rethink the building envelope and boldly explore performative qualities of a facade. Participants are free to select any context of their choosing, real or virtual, at any scale and on any building type. In phase one of the competition four winners will be awarded a $1,000 stipend used towards the development of their design. The winning proposal will be built at scale with fabrication sponsorship by Zahner Co, will win $1,000  and will be exhibited in Austin, Texas for the TEX-FAB 5 event in February 2014.

Designing Recovery. AIA, Architecture for Humanity, Make It Right Foundation, and the St. Bernard Project are sponsoring a residential design competition that will substantially impact the lives of families who have been affected by disaster. The competition solicits high quality, affordable housing designs to reduce damaged caused by natural disasters. Three cities (Queens, NY; Joplin, MO; and New Orleans, LA) have been chosen as the settings for the competition. $10,000 will be awarded to one design for each location, and the goal is to utilize as many entries as possible to construct affordable housing.

Kansas City is on the brink of investing in various rail transportation projects, a critical juncture that offers the metropolitan region the opportunity to create a new vision for the future. A joint effort between the Kansas City Regional Transit Alliance and the AIA Kansas City Young Architects Forum, Transform KC encourages anyone with ideas, regardless of background and experience, to submit transportation, urban design, and architecture designs to its 2013 Ideas Competition.

Architecture at ZeroA competition for zero net energy architecture, Architecture at Zero is open to students and professionals in pursuit of energy efficient design. Presented by Pacific Gas and Electric Company and AIA San Francisco in partnership with the Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation, the competition invites designs for a new, 150 unit mixed-use residential apartment building in San Francisco that is as close to zero net energy as possible. The structure must consist of affordable and market rate housing, and include a ground floor neighborhood-serving grocery store. $25,000 in prize money will be awarded. There will be at least one award for a student entry and one for a professional entry.

Redesigning Detroit: A New Vision for an Iconic Site. Opportunity Detroit is on the hunt for innovative, creative, and inspired designs for a new building that will be built on the historic Hudson’s site, one of the most beloved locations in downtown Detroit. The goal is to change the city’s image and to promote it as a positive place where anyone may live, work, play and invest. The competition, sponsored by Rock Ventures, will award a first prize of $15,000, a second prize of $5,000 and third prize of $2,500. Take action and submit a new vision for the iconic site.

SOCIALIGHT. The Concept Lumière Urbaine invites architects, landscape architects, and urban planners to re-imagine the future role of lighting in urban neighborhoods.  The foundation encourages participants to think beyond the practical use of lighting (security, traffic, and signaling) and consider the way that light can affect the emotions and experiences of the residents of a city.
