Join AN this Friday, January 11 at the Center for Architecture for the next Cocktails & Conversations discussion between AN‘s Editor-in-Chief William Menking and Snøhetta principal Craig Dykers. The program pairs a leading architect with a critic, journalist, or curator for an evening of conversation. Bartender Toby Cecchini will be preparing special cocktails inspired by the unique architecture of Snøhetta. We’re guessing it might be called the Fjord with a shot of Blue Curacao and big, craggy mountains of ice.

AIA Chicago announced their 2012 awards, to be officially presented tomorrow at the chapter’s annual meeting.
Firm of the year goes to Farr Associates, whose sustainable design credentials include seven LEED Platinum projects, two net-zero-energy buildings and three LEED-Neighborhood Developments. Farr was the first firm in the world to rack up three LEED Platinum projects. The New York Times’ Keith Schneider once called them “The most prominent of the city’s growing cadre of ecologically sensitive architects.” Eco-urbanists are in good company these days, and it seems a timely choice by AIA to highlight a firm so actively involved in the hard work of implementing smart growth and sustainable design.
Tuesday! Discuss Downtown LA’s Resurgence at the A+D Museum

As we’ve reported quite a bit, downtown LA is seeing a formidable resurgence. An equally formidable panel will meet at LA’s A+D Museum on Tuesday to debate the phenomenon, looking at the architectural development of Grand Avenue, adaptive reuse in the historic corridor, hip emergence and clean tech in the arts district, and so on.
Panelists include architect Michael Maltzan; AN West Coast Editor Sam Lubell; KCRW’s Frances Anderton; Ayahlushim Getachew, Senior Vice President at Thomas Properties Group; Bob Hale, Principal at Rios Clementi Hale Studios; and Carol Schatz, President and CEO of Downtown Center Business Improvement District and the Central City Association. The event will also include a signing of Anderton’s illuminating new book on Grand Avenue, Grand Illusion.

The second annual Critical Halloween hosted by the Storefront for Art and Architecture promises to generate a spooky skyline on Saturday. Mixing in a new theme of “Metaphor” with last year’s banner of “Banality,” guests are invited to critique and comment through costume. NACTO Celebrates 21st Century Transportation Planning in New York

Planning and transportation wonks from around the country gathered at NYU’s Kimmel Center this morning to mark the beginning of three-days of the NACTO Designing Cities conference, emphasizing new and innovative ideas for designing streets and public spaces. To jumpstart the event, the National Association of City Transportation Officials released the Urban Street Design Guide, collecting design principles, strategies, and case studies from across the country on how to best design and implement everything from cycletracks to bus rapid transit.
The Metropolitan New York Chapter of Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) announces its 2012 Trade Show and Seminar Event. The 2012 Annual Metro New York Chapter, CSI Trade Show and Education Day will explore the ways in which you can contribute to better building. Come learn, share your knowledge, and interact with others who share your quest for doing a better job of designing and constructing buildings.

Tonight! Open Outcry Furniture Reception in Manhattan
American conceptual artist Mary Ellen Carroll (MEC, design studios) and the British architect Simon Dance (Simon Dance Design) are throwing a party this evening in New York to celebrate Open Outcry Furniture, a new sculptural seating arrangement that can be configured in a variety of shapes and forms. Join the designers at the R 20th Century Gallery at 82 Franklin Street between 6 and 8:00p.m. for the opening reception.

Space-starved New Yorkers—especially architects and designers—love to see how Gotham residents with a space surplus (which usually equates money) live in their brownstones, townhouses, and elegant apartments. This weekend, October 6 and 7, Open House New York will celebrate its 10th OHNY weekend and open some of the most interesting private residences in the city for limited public tours.
For example, OHNY will open up beautiful Midtown residences by Jayne Michaels and Ali Tayer and an elegant Brooklyn Heights home by Lea Ciavarra. Even two hip homes in Williamsburg by Aizaki Allie and Christopher Coleman will be on display. These tours are always very popular, but it’s necessary to reserve your spot before you arrive on their stoops and lobbies.

This weekend, October 6 and 7, Open House New York (OHNY) is celebrating the tenth anniversary of its popular weekend of tours, lectures, and open houses of many of the New York City’s most important buildings and spaces. In its ten years OHNY has hosted over two million guests and remains New York’s most important architectural outreach to the public. It will launch the weekend with a party at the Times Square Museum and Visitors Center and the city’s architecture community should be there to support the organization and its mission to serve as a bridge between great design and the public. The Architect’s Newspaper will be there with David Rockwell and we look forward to seeing you!
Event> Art, Environment, Action! at Parsons

On Friday, the Sheila C. Johnson Design Center at The Parsons New School for Design will kick off their annual fall exhibition, Art, Environment, Action! The 11-week interdisciplinary and interactive laboratory, open to the public, includes workshops, lectures, discussions and a wilderness hike through Greenwich Village. A varied group of contributors, from dancers and chefs to designers and scientists will investigate the common premise of how their interactions within the natural world can be used to bring consciousness to the environment.
In the first event of the showcase, the Public Laboratory for Open Technology and Science will host a map-knitting workshop. Participants will remap a public area in the city using an elaborate handmade camera rigging system along with balloons and kites to capture aerial images of the site below. The images will then be posted online and layered atop existing satellite images of the area. The result is an attempt to use maps as communication and a tool in redefining public areas as a community owned territory.
