DS+R and OLIN’s “Granite Web” Fails to Ensnare Aberdeen

In a tightly contested decision, the City of Aberdeen, Scotland has decided not to move forward with a dramatic $222 million renovation of Union Terrace Gardens designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro and OLIN. The 22 to 20 vote may have brushed aside the so-called “Granite Web,” but it did retain the principals behind the design for whatever future plans are built on the site, including better pedestrian access, a revamped city council chambers, and a new art gallery. Council Lead Councilor Barney Crockett said the project “never won the whole-hearted acceptance of the people of Aberdeen.” [Via World Architecture News.]
We can’t blame a Times caption writer for misunderstanding the renderings of Diller Scofidio + Renfro’s proposed education building for Columbia University Medical Center. One corner does appear remarkably well ventilated, leading to a caption that described a view of multiple balconies as a “cutaway rendering.”
Watch the Broad Museum Come to Life in Real-Time

While cameras allowing real-time viewing of work on downtown LA’s Broad museum have been in place since construction began last fall, the scenery is finally getting more interesting. The structure’s parking garage is now complete and construction permits were recently approved for the museum itself, according to LA Downtown News.
DS+R was selected to design a new residential tower at Hudson Yards, adjacent to the third section of the High Line.
Diller Scofidio + Renfro is climbing ever higher near the High Line with their first ever skyscraper. The Wall Street Journal reports that the firm was selected by Related Development to work with the Rockwell Group on an 800 foot tall, 700 unit residential building that will play well with its architectural cousin next door. Elizabeth Diller tells the paper the architects are “very conscious of the adjacency to the High Line.” Indeed. DS+R, along with Field Operations, will be unveiling plans for the third and final section of the High Line at a community meeting tonight.

Much Ado About Nothing At Grand Avenue

Curbed LA yesterday shared schemes for the zone around Diller Scofidio + Renfro’s Broad Museum, revealing renderings of two residential towers to the south and east of the project and space for a new plaza. The images sent the ever-excitable architecture community chattering. But while it’s great to get a better sense of what’s going up, as the blog pointed out and the architects have reiterated, the images don’t reveal what the design will actually look like.
An Omen For DS+R?

The red carpet is not a place where architects usually spend their time. But on Sunday Diller Scofidio + Renfro took home a Breakthrough Award, for their work in architecture. The prizes, handed out at the Pacific Design Center (AN was there believe it or not..) went to emerging performers like The Kids Are Alright’s Josh Hutcherson (Actor in Film) and Modern Family’s Sophia Vergara (Actress in TV). So how did Architecture wind up on the roster? “We’ve noticed that architects are starting to be known by name again,” said Jan Hall, Marketing Director for MMC, which runs the competition. On Monday, we’ll find out if DS+R win Eli Broad’s coveted new museum commission downtown. If they do, they’ll no doubt catapult into the elite starchitect sphere… Perhaps this is a harbinger of things to come?
