Bestor Unleashes Disco Silencio at SCI-Arc

Dean's List, Newsletter, West | Monday, April 4, 2011 | .

Architectural exhibition openings are hardly known for their cool vibe, but that’s apparently because they’re not usually put on by LA-based Barbara Bestor Architecture. On April 1 SCI-Arc opened Bestor’s Disco Silencio to a crowd very eager to party. The installation at the SCI-Arc gallery is a demi-dodecahedron formed in plywood meant to be a silent retreat for frazzled SCI-Arc architecture students (at least when the DJ isn’t spinning and disco lights are whirling).

WAY TO GO CLIVE
The unofficial mayor of Silver Lake, Barbara Bestor, once again transformed local Mexican restaurant Casita del Campo into a sweaty mosh pit for architects and other designers at the end of March. Back when we reported on his fantastic new house in West Hollywood, we couldn’t help but notice that it seemed an empty place for a bachelor. Read More

Haven For Hipsters

West | Tuesday, October 6, 2009 | .

For those of you  Silver Lake architects looking for new offices, may we recommend a great, and ironically cool spot. The Haven of Rest, once the 1970′s offices for a radio ministry of the same name (where you could “take the good ship Grace to Jesus with Captain Bill as your guide,”) is now a haven for creative workers. The spot, which opened in September (it sits next to the Haven’s original recording studio, which looks not unlike a giant boat)  currently rents out workspaces and cubicles to filmmakers, writers, editors, a dancer, and a record company, among others. It was renovated back in the late 90′s by architect Barbara Bestor for record company Dust Bro’s, so it includes much of her brightly colored modern aesthetic. There are three or four offices left; contact Dirty Robber, the production company who leases the spaces, if you’re interested. Read More

Architecture was heard and not seen at City Listening, the latest installation of de LaB (design east of La Brea), LA’s semi-regular design gathering hosted by AN contributors Haily Zaki and Alissa Walker (the writer of this post, but better known to you as “we“). Monday night’s event was held at the new Barbara Bestor-designed GOOD Space in Hollywood, where design writers and bloggers crawled out from under their keyboards to show us their faces, and in some cases, their feelings. The evening was packed with AN contributors and readers, including two pieces out of seven read that were originally published in AN!
