Cocktails & Conversations – Richard Weller & William Menking

Please join us at The Center for Architecture for a conversation between Richard Weller and William Menking, with cocktails by bartender and author Toby Cecchini!

Our new series Cocktails & Conversations pairs an architect and a critic, journalist, or curator. Of course, it wouldn’t be Friday night without a suitable beverage. A custom drink inspired by the architect’s work will be created especially for the occasion.

Richard Weller is the Martin and Margy Meyerson Chair of Urbanism and Professor and Chair of Landscape Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. Formerly, he was Director of the Australian Urban Design Research Centre and the design firm Room 4.1.3, known for the controversial National Museum of Australia. In addition to three books regarding his design and planning work, he has published over 70 papers on the intersection of ecology, art, and design, and given hundreds of public lectures around the world. His current research concerns conflict zones between rapid urbanization and biodiversity.

William Menking, the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of The Architect’s Newspaper, is an architectural historian, writer, critic, and curator of architecture and urbanism. He is professor of architecture, urbanism, and city planning at Pratt Institute and has lectured and taught at schools in the United States and Europe. He has been published in numerous architectural publications, anthologies, and museum catalogues. He has curated and organized international exhibitions on the visionary British architects Archigram, the Italian radical architects Superstudio, and contemporary English design, and he served as Commissioner of the U.S. pavilion at the 2008 Venice Biennale. He has participated in various juries including the 2006 and 2008 AIANY New Practices New York competition, 2007 and 2008 San Francisco AIA Honor Awards, and the 2007 Lumen awards for lighting.

Toby Cecchini is a writer and bartender. He has written on food, wine, and spirits for GQ, Food and Wine, and The New York Times. His first book, Cosmopolitan: A Bartender’s Life, was published in 2003

One drink included: $12.50 for AIA and ASLA members; $15 for non-members
