Are you eager to put your architectural design skills to the test?  Here are some exciting upcoming competitions that will be sure to present you with the type of challenge you’ve been waiting for. AN‘s editors have combed through our online listing of architecture and design competitions to bring you five of the most interesting competitions happening right now. If you’d like your competition to be included in the listing, please submit it here.

Architecture at ZeroA competition for zero net energy architecture, Architecture at Zero is open to students and professionals in pursuit of energy efficient design. Presented by Pacific Gas and Electric Company and AIA San Francisco in partnership with the Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation, the competition invites designs for a new, 150 unit mixed-use residential apartment building in San Francisco that is as close to zero net energy as possible. The structure must consist of affordable and market rate housing, and include a ground floor neighborhood-serving grocery store. $25,000 in prize money will be awarded. There will be at least one award for a student entry and one for a professional entry.

Submission Deadline: October 1, 2013.

Workplace of the Future Design Competition. The modern office is evolving quicker than ever. In a quest to find innovative design schemes for the workplace of the future, Metropolis magazine and Business Interiors by Staples are holding an open call for submissions available to the design community to imagine what our work lives will look like by 2020. Entries must address all facets of design including sustainability, accessibility, material innovation, and technology. The competition will award a first prize of $7,500, world-wide publicity, and assistance in propelling the winning vision forward. The runner-up will receive $2,500.

The 2013 George Matsumoto Prize. Encouraging young architects and clients to continue the Modernist movement in residential architecture, the competition focuses on Modernist architecture in North Carolina. The competition consists of internationally-recognized jurors and a public voting system. While homes must be located in the state, designers can be from anywhere. The Matsumoto Prize is a unique design competition featuring $6,000 in awards. First place is awarded $3,000, second place $2,000, third place $1,000 and each winner will receive a trophy to recognize a talent in Modernist architecture.

54 Jeff / An Ideas Competition. Once the site of the Grand Rapids Public Museum, 54 Jefferson has been closed for almost two decades. The space needs a purpose, and the Ideas Competition is awarding over $10,000 in cash prizes to members of the design community who have ideas to revive the site. Submissions will be showcased in an exhibition within 54 Jefferson during ArtPrize 2013 at SiTE:LAB, an exhibition viewed by more than 30,000 people. Jurors consist of Reed Kroloff, Director of the Cranbrook Academy of Art and former editor-in-chief of Architecture magazine.

TIMBER New England. New England was built with timber and, while building methods have evolved, the rich history is still alive today. Timber is an organic and renewable resource used for sustainability purposes. The TIMBER New England Competition asks designers to push beyond the typical use of engineered lumber to propose a site-specific installation within the New England building techniques to be realized at BSA SPACE as part of the exhibition URBAN TIMBER opening next year. Three finalists will each receive a $7,500 grant and will work closely with a design professional to develop an installation.
