The Architect’s Newspaper‘s and Enclos’ facades+ PERFORMANCE conference is right around the corner. The two-day event, held in New York City on April 11 and 12, will feature some of the AEC industry’s top experts in building skin technology. Be there with a broad consortium of your peers to watch these heavyweights analyze, discuss, and dispute the development, implementation, and maintenance of high performance enclosures. See a full list of the conference’s events after the jump. Tickets are going fasts! Sign up today

1. CALIBRATED FACADES   8 LU AIA CE CREDITS
Grasshopper + Revit
Nathan Miller, CASE
SOLD OUT!

2. FACADE DESIGN, ANALYSIS & OPTIMIZATION WITH DESIGNSCRIPT 8 LU AIA CE CREDITS
Robert Aish, Autodesk, Erik Verboon & Gustav Fagerstrom, Buro Happold
DesignScript is a new scripting language for computational architecture, first presented at ACADIA 2012 and AU 2012. The workshop will introduce participants to DesignScript and help participants develop computational design strategies for facade design and performance analysis. Participants will be able to combine the scripting and geometry tools  available in DesignScript with a range of analysis and simulation plug-in’s, including: Robot (structural analysis) [Autodesk], SMART form (form finding) [Buro Happold], Performative Design [Andrew Marsh], Green Building Studio [Autodesk]

This workshop exactly realizes the theme of the symposium which is  to combine façade design with performance analysis. In addition the unique combination of programming facilities available with DesignScript enables participants to easily build their own façade design optimization tools
Required software: AutoCAD 2013 64 bit edition [own license or 30 day trial license], DesignScript [free from Autodesk labs, optionally Robot 2013 64 bit edition [own license or 30 day trial license]

3. ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE IN PARAMETRIC ENVELOPE DESIGN
8 LU/HSW AIA CE CREDITS
Grasshopper + DIVA
Jon Sargent, SOM
This workshop will explore computational connections between parametric facade models and environmental performance. Using Grasshopper and the DIVA-for-Rhino plug-in, participants will learn how to feed their design ideas through validated simulation engines to assess daylighting,  energy use, and occupant comfort.  With a series of hands-on exercises, the workshop will walk participants through the process of asking relevant performance questions, setting up geometric and/or material parameters for exploration, running simple optimizations, and drawing actionable conclusions from multivariate fitness landscapes.
Required software: McNeel Rhino 4/5, Grasshopper, DIVA-for-Rhino plug-in

4. INTERACTIVE SURFACES   8 LU AIA CE CREDITS
Firefly
Andy Payne, LIFT Architects
There has long been a desire in architecture to create buildings that are able to actively respond to their environments. The facade of a building is the liminal surface across which information and environmental performance is frequently negotiated. Following the latest trends, it is evident that architects in the future will be increasingly called upon to create building systems, spaces, and structures that are computationally and display some form of intelligent adaptability. Using both Grasshopper and the Firefly plug-in, this workshop will focus on producing facade prototypes that are configurable, sensate, and active.

NOTE: There will be an additional materials fee of $115 added to the registration price. Each participant will receive a specialized Arduino/Firefly electronics kit. The kit includes: an Arduino Uno R3 microcontroller, a 6′ USB cable, a pack of jumper wires, a standard servo motor, a DC motor, a 5V DC power adapter, and the new Firefly Interactive Prototyping Shield (v1.0). This shield provides access to a number of built-in, ready-to-use sensors and actuators including: 3 linear sliders (potentiometers), a light sensor, a two-axis joystick, 3 push buttons, a red LED, a yellow LED, a Green LED, and a Tri-color LED, 2 servo connections, and a high-voltage MOSFET circuit capable of driving lights, valves, DC motors, etc.

5. INTRODUCTION TO PARAMETRIC DESIGN WITH GRASSHOPPER   8 LU AIA CE CREDITS
Ronnie Parsons, Mode Collective
This workshop will focus on the fundamental concepts and workflows for creating performance-based design models with the parametric design tool, Grasshopper for Rhino3D. Combining the intuition of visual programming with the robustness of parametric design, Grasshopper offers unprecedented fluidity throughout the development of a project. Using Grasshopper, participants will be guided through a series of exercises designed to emphasize the relevant applications of parametric design for professional practice.
Required software: Rhino5 (Evaluation Link); Grasshopper Version 09.0014 (Download Link)

6. PYTHON SCRIPTING IN RHINO   8 LU AIA CE CREDITS
Gil Akos, Mode Collective
Scripting offers designers a powerful tool to automate routines, investigate diverse ways to process solutions, and generate intelligent models. This workshop will explore the fundamental concepts and strategic approaches for an effective use of scripts within the creative process. Focusing on implementation within façade design, we will cover a range of techniques including surface panelization, analysis, and variable articulation. Exercises will be delivered through the IronPython/Rhinoscript package with additional content using the GhPython add-on for Grasshopper. Beginners are welcome, but are encouraged to review our introductory online course before arrival to ensure a fun, hands-on, and fast-paced workshop experience.
