Cornell Closes in on New Roosevelt Island Campus

The stars are aligning for Cornell’s proposed technology campus on Roosevelt Island. The Morphosis-designed proposal has successfully made its way through New York City’s Uniform Land Use Review Procedures (ULURP), and recently won the support of Manhattan Community Board 8 and Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer. Two remaining review processes are left, and if all goes well, Cornell will have the green light to start construction by 2014.

While their influence on NYC’s technology spheres is expected, I think the Cornell campus will be good news also for the real estate scene in Roosevelt Island. I feel the area could use a lot more of luxury buildings to spruce up the area. I guess we already have a few, like Riverwalk Court http://newconstructionmanhattan.com/buildings/riverwalk-court, but the neighborhood needs a rejuvenation of sorts, and this campus could be the trigger to do just that.
Wasting the endowment.
I’m not happy about this. It’s good for NYC, but it sucks for Cornell and for Ithaca. And the whole damn thing is in a flood plain, so it’s isn’t going to last long.
This is the sort of pyramid-building which means money donated to Cornell is wasted, rather than going to education of students.
