The Banality of Fashion

The offending images: These were among the photos from a fashion shoot done at Peter Eisenman's Holocaust memorial in Berlin. (Courtesy New Statesman)
First the cracks, and now this? Sure, Peter Eisenman’s Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin has seen its fair share of controversies over the years, but it doesn’t get much worse than a fashion shoot for an in-flight magazine. According to the New Statesman‘s scoop, easyJet had no idea the Holocaust memorial had been used as the backdrop for a bunch of models because its magazine is produced by an outside company. That company has yet to speak up about the matter, so it remains unclear whether the fine folks at INK publishing are ignorant or just stupid. Looks like Hannah Arendt is right once again.
UPDATE: Ink Publishing, the company behind the offending shoot responds, and it’s worse than we thought:
Ink Publishing sincerely apologises to anyone who may have been offended by the fashion shoot in the November issue of easyJet inflight, in which a model is photographed in front of Berlin’s Holocaust Memorial. Far from trivializing the Memorial, on the contrary the intention was to encourage passengers to visit for themselves.
The aim of each monthly shoot is to highlight an easyJet destination and tell a relevant narrative. The shoot was intended to not only promote local design talent and the city itself, but to raise awareness. From an educational perspective, it is of the utmost importance that visitors to Berlin see the Jewish Museum (who gave us written permission to shoot in their grounds) and Holocaust Memorial first hand. We absolutely regret any offence caused.
We’re speechless yet again.

I’m surprised this hasn’t happened sooner.
This is the funnest memorial to the saddest event.
Go there on any given summer day, and you will see people play, frolic, and make-out.
I understand the concept, intellects understand it, but it doesn’t convey the topic successfully, as it is really just an urban playground.
Looks like Jon Rosenbaum is right once again.

dont get your gotkes in a twist. it’s an open, 5-acre site in the middle of a MASSIVE metropolis, what else are inhabitants suposed to do besides use it as they see fit. if mr. eisenman abstraction is lost on the user, that seems to be his fault rather than the public’s.
On a side note about architecture and fashion, I have a recent blog post about the potential frivolity of both here: http://www.grandtradition.net/node/641
For all the theory that’s supposed to be informing this project, it’s no more than just the latest in a long series of Eisenman’s grid games. That it gets applied to a memorial is less important to him no doubt than the further demonstration of geometrical dexterity.
Funny thing is I’ve heard him lecture on this project not by way of generative processes or warped grids, but about the -experience- of the place. Under that justification: let the children play, let the tourists be amused, let me jump on top of the blocks (I did!), and let the fashion photographers shoot!
To Matt Chaban: EasyJet, Ink publishing, and some random stylist have responded genuinely. Maybe you should be directing your exasperated attacks elsewhere.
i’m gonna make my own post about it

Почему в институте пары, а в школе уроки?
Потому что в школе учатся, а в институте паряться!!!
i don’t see how you are so blantantly offended and speechless. its a stunning memorial…haunting to anyone who walks among the extrusioins…does this mean it is not also beautiful, a piece of art, and complementary to other artistic mediums? it seems you have incredibly narrow minds…or have never visited the memorial.
Given the controversies surrounding this project (form, function, intent, monument use/purposes in Germany, use of antigraffiti protection produced by Degussa–sister of the company that produced Zyklon B, which was used in the gas chambers– etc), I’m severely disappointed with the creators of the photoshoot. These controversies are actually fairly publicly debated, seriously, just Google the Mahnmal’s name, or search it in Wikipedia. It’s a gross oversight.
I’m curious, though, as to who designed the garments used in the shoot? Has anyone found this out?
