A veteran of architectural and cultural programming, Gregory Wessner, has been named the executive director of Open House New York (OHNY). Wessner, the longtime director of exhibitions and special projects at the Architectural League of New York, will begin working at OHNY in December. He sees a growing civic role for the organization as it moves into its second decade.

Open House New York gives all of us who love New York the rare and special chance to follow our curiosity into the buildings and spaces that make this the greatest city in the world,” Wessner wrote in an email. “As the complexities of planning, building, and preserving New York increase, the mandate of Open House New York is as important as ever: to provide a broad audience the opportunity to experience first-hand the diversity of New York architecture, infrastructure and public space and to engage the players who shape the city–from designers to developers to public officials–as a means of creating a more informed conversation about how the city will grow and change in the years ahead.”

Since its founding in 2001, OHNY has promoted appreciation and understanding of New York’s built environment by providing the access to the city’s architecture, infrastructure, and public spaces, coupled with educational programs. Millions of people have participated in the organization’s tours and public events.

Acting executive director Ellen Ryan is stepping down to join her husband, Randall Mason, in Rome, where he will have a six month residency at the American Academy.
