Modernism Wars: The National Register, Defender of Modern Buildings

February 13, 2016 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm PST

Free
In spite of resurgent interest in Modernism in both international and academic communities as well as popular culture, and belying the enthusiasm experienced at Modernism Week, modern buildings throughout the world are under siege. Even in Palm Springs, a mecca of Modernism, significant buildings are still at risk of demolition. The National Register (NR) can provide a fast track to confer credibility and open doors to financial incentives that can combat the forces that threaten modern resources. Join a panel of experts from across the country to examine case studies and discuss how saving midcentury modern buildings may require a new preservation paradigm, and how nomination to the NR might be used as a critical force in this new process.
Panel Participants:
Beth Edwards Harris, CA Historic Resource Commission
Adrian Fine, LA Conservancy
Alison Jefferson, University of California, Santa Barbara
Chandler McCoy, Getty Foundation
Max Page, The Fine Arts Center U Mass Amherst
Susan Secoy Jensen, Architect, City of Orange
Matt Shaw, The Architect’s Newspaper
