Designing Better Affordable Housing

December 1, 2015 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm EST

Well-designed housing and communities uplift residents, help strengthen social connections, relieve stress, and enhance a sense of safety and belonging. But, the pressures of today’s market that views buildings purely as capital, threaten the ideals of affordable housing. Join a distinguished panel of developers, architects, and professors, as they explore both ambitious and achievable ideas for public and below-market housing in New York. With decades of experience in preservation, policy, and design, these experts will discuss how best to renovate and repurpose the existing buildings in the City while bringing new sustainable development into the affordable housing market. This program delves into the themes of our exhibition Affordable New York: A Housing Legacy.

This event is co-presented with Docomomo and is also part of the Museum’s Activist New York program series.

Speakers:
Jean-Louis Cohen, Sheldon H. Solow Professor of the History of Architecture, New York University
Theodore Liebman, FAIA, Architect, Principal, Perkins Eastman
