Spring Lecture Series 2013: Rethinking Kahn – John Hong

John Hong leads the architecture firm SsD along with co-principal Jinhee Park. Their work approaches design as a convergent, interdisciplinary venture that aspires to bridge the utopian and the pragmatic. Instead of separating aspects of architecture, urbanism, landscape, history, social systems, and codes into their constituent disciplines, these essential design ingredients are simultaneously explored so that minimum form gains maximum effect. In this way sustainability emerges as an integrated rather than additive result. John Hong received a Master in Architecture with Distinction from the Harvard Graduate School of Design and a B.Sc. in Architecture with Honors from the University of Virginia. Along with being published in major international media such as Metropolis Magazine, Dwell Magazine, Architectural Record, The New Yorker, and PBS, his firm has garnered many prestigious awards including twelve AIA awards, Architectural Record’s Design Vanguard, the Emerging Voices Award from the Architectural League NY, a Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction Award, and the Metropolis Next Generation Prize to name a few. Since 2012, he has served as Distinguished Visiting Professor at the City College of New York and from 2007-2013 he served as Associate Professor in Practice at the Harvard GSD. Award winning and published works include ‘Braver House,’ a minimum-footprint residence that breaks down polarities between inside and outside, ‘White Block Gallery,’ a contemporary art gallery in Korea’s Heyri Art Valley, ’Cloud,’ an interactive light and sound sculpture, and the ‘Big Dig House,’ a prototype building constructed out of refuse from Boston’s Big Dig. Current projects include a micro-housing and gallery complex in Seoul and a science building for the campus of an international fortune 500 company. John Hong will be teaching as a distinguished Visiting Professor in the fall of 2013 semester at the Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture.
