SCI-Arc Lecture: Cynthia Davidson – Image and Word, A Critical Context

Cynthia Davidson is the founding editor of Log: Observations on Architecture and the Contemporary City, a journal begun in 2003, and editor of the Writing Architecture Series books published by MIT Press.

The tri-annual magazine Log, which focuses on “observations on architecture and the contemporary city,” was first launched ten years ago by the Anyone project in New York as a reaction to—and especially a resistance to—the seductive power of the image in media today. Countering the proliferation of architectural renderings made “real” with programs like Photoshop, Log emphasizes the importance of the text in critical and analytic thinking in architecture. This is not to refuse the image, but to situate the work it represents critically, through writing, and to work with image and word together in framing a new context in which to discuss ideas in architecture today.
