Pat O’Neill: Spatial Affects

Pat O’Neill, a founding father of the Los Angeles avant-garde film scene and optical effects pioneer, is best known for his highly graphic, layered, and reflexive film work. Los Angeles Filmforum at MOCA presents a program of short works by O’Neill that situate this important and singular artist within the broader context of contemporary art. A master of experimental montage and compositing techniques, his innovations were prescient of our current digital landscape, while his most recent work embraces the possibilities of this new technology. Formally rich, spatially ambiguous, and super saturated with color and feeling, O’Neill’s films are akin to paintings moving in time.
