NYBG Landscape Design Portfolio Lecture Series 2013: Mary Margaret Jones: Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park – Sustainable Renewal for the 21st Century

Now in its 15th year, the Garden’s popular evening lecture series invites outstanding designers from around the world to discuss their favorite and signature landscape projects, providing insight into their working methods and design philosophies. This year’s speakers share a focus on reclaiming and regenerating urban landscapes—both vast and intimate—from parking lots to public spaces to industrial waterfronts.

Speaker: Mary Margaret Jones FASLA

Title: Site/Sustainability/Memorability: Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park

President of Hargreaves Associates, Mary Margaret Jones has served as senior principal in charge of award-winning projects in the U.S. and abroad. The firm’s work for the London 2012 Olympic Park combined traditional British park design – specifically Victorian and post-war pleasure and festival gardens – with groundbreaking green technologies. Planned to provide a legacy of ecologically planned public parkland in London’s East End, as well as a stunning setting for the summer games, the 247-acre project included the transformation of an industrial site and the restoration of a the canalized River Lea into an attractive waterway. Jones, who is currently Chair of the Board of Trustees of the American Academy in Rome, will speak also of projects in New York City, Dallas, Houston and Oklahoma City.
