Gezi Park, Istanbul: Reconsiderations

Titled “Gezi Park, Istanbul: Reconsiderations,” the symposium will cast a new look at the spontaneous and memorable occupation of Gezi Park in Istanbul during the early months of summer, which drew world-wide attention to the power of public space as a political platform. Recalling the recent events of the “Arab spring,” yet radically different from them, Gezi Park demonstrations opened a wide range of questions, expressed through colorful, creative, and varied venues. The accompanying debates highlighted the active role played by the city itself in the expression of public opinion. Inevitably, they also flattened complex issues about the history of Turkey, as well as that of the city itself. The goal is to reflect on the past, present, and future of this central node in Istanbul from several perspectives: history of urban forms, socio-political contexts and their ramifications, architectural and urban design practices, notions of public space, cultural and ideological dimensions, and everyday life.
