The Los Angeles Forum for Architecture and Urban Design (LA Forum) is pleased to announce its annual fundraiser ForumFest 2013, honoring Los Angeles-based architect Michael Maltzan, FAIA, of Michael Maltzan Architecture. The highly anticipated evening will be held at the Maltzan-designed Inner-City Arts in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday, November 9th, 2013 from 6 to 10 pm.

The LA Forum has chosen Michael Maltzan as the honoree because he represents the best of what architecture can do today. Now being built all over the globe, the work of his office started with and continues to engage Los Angeles with an urbanistic and social specificity rooted in continually engaging the question of ‘how do we live here.’ From parks in Playa Vista; to low-income housing in Downtown done in partnership with the Skid Row Housing Trust; to art and museum complexes in urban and suburban conditions alike (including the site of ForumFest 2013, Inner-City Arts, a nonprofit organization near Skid Row that provides free arts education to underprivileged youth), Michael’s work resonates with a focused sophistication and continuous celebration of the power of space, experience, and Southern California light against his dynamic white forms.

Emerging from the rigorous traditions of the Harvard Graduate School of Design, and advanced in thinking and building due to his time spent in the offices of Machado Silvetti and Frank Gehry, Michael has built his own firm and voice with an international reputation. Championing a beauty of geometry and a complexity of formalism, Michael has developed an exceptionally broad-based collection of projects that serve our entire community and city; addressing underserved needs and populations on the highest levels. With this focus on Los Angeles in mind, the LA Forum recognizes Maltzan not just for his buildings, but for their relationship to the city and the complexity by which they mediate the high and the low, the everyday and the special.

Past ForumFest honorees include art advocate Merry Norris; Forum co-founder Aaron Betsky; Pritzker-prize winner Thom Mayne of Morphosis Architects; Forum co-founder Craig Hodgetts and partner Ming Fung of Hodgetts + Fung Design & Architecture; and Frank Koning and Julie Eizenberg of Koning Eizenberg Architects.
