On Wednesday October 3rd, 2012 desigNYC, a nonprofit organization committed to improving the lives of New Yorkers through the power of design, will celebrate its 2012 collaborations at its annual event and exhibit opening, at GD Cucine at 227 West 17th Street in Chelsea. Following the opening, the exhibition will be open to the public from 10 am–6 pm daily. Please RSVP for the October 3rd opening.
desigNYC is a “do-tank” that demonstrates the impact of design by connecting nonprofits, community groups and city agencies with passionate pro bono design professionals interested in the public good. “The teams we’ve recruited this year have been incredibly dedicated to tackling challenging topics, such as human trafficking, public transportation, prisoner reentry, and neighborhood revitalization, to name a few. The design solutions they propose to recharge their communities are fresh and affordable, demonstrating the highest standard of design,” says Laetitia Wolff, desigNYC’s executive director.
Launched at the beginning of 2012, desigNYC’s third round of project collaborations, orchestrated under the annual theme of Recharging Communities, connected 15 extraordinary organizations with close to 50 talented design professionals who are leaders in the fields of architectural, landscape, interior, experience and communications design. Highlights amongst this year’s design solutions include a lobby refurbishing for an East Village community bank serving low-income customers, a graphic identity and signage system for a Brooklyn neighborhood compost initiative, a green infrastructure/parklet for the Gowanus Canal area and a deployable urban backyard kit for a Lower East Side street festival.
