The Sleep ReardonSmith Student Award was created to give students of architecture and design across Europe an opportunity to engage with the challenges and delights of working in the hotel and resort sector. Part of Sleep, Europe’s leading hotel design and development event, the Student Award is created afresh each year with a new brief based on an imagined scenario that, nevertheless, closely parallels a real project. As such, we believe that the competition offers a valuable learning experience. While the judges look for imagination and a freshness of approach, it is as equally important that the concepts are plausible, operationally thought-through and potentially buildable.
The absolute deadline for entries is Friday 24th October 2014. There will be one winning entry and two runners up. The winning student(s) and the runners up will be expected to attend the first day of Sleep on Wednesday 26th November at the Business Design Centre, London where their work will be displayed. There will be an informal session when the students will be able to engage with a small number of specially invited hotel design professionals who will discuss and critique their entries. The winning student(s) will also be offered the opportunity to make a short presentation about their entry in the main Sleep conference. There will be a cash prize of £500.00 for the winning student(s).
This Year’s Brief
Students are invited to design a new hotel on a site which has already been cleared in the old quarter of a European City. Given its location, the hotel is expected to attract both business and leisure travellers and should equate to a good four star standard in terms of its facilities and the sizes and mix of bedrooms and suites. We are intentionally leaving the brief loose so that competitors have the maximum opportunity to demonstrate their creative skills. Our one stipulation is that the architectural massing needs to respond to the surrounding context and the environmental impact of the design reacts to its surroundings and is suitable for the site. The total site area is 1,500m2 approximately however your proposal will include 10,000m2 of Hotel which includes 2 floors of carpark located below ground level.
DEADLINE: Friday, October 24, 2014.
