The Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts today announced the latest recipients of their grants to individuals, a $490,000 pot of money split among 63 projects all over the world, including an extensive photographic survey of Le Corbusier’s completed architectural works by photographer Richard Pare; a series of community-based design and urban development courses in Costa Rica; and a compilation of criticism about Berlin‘s Institut für Raumexperimente (Institute for Spatial Experiments).
The Getty Trust announced last week that it will give its J. Paul Getty Medal to Frank Gehry. This is the third time the Getty will hand out the award—established “to recognize living individuals from all over the world for their leadership in the fields in which the Getty works”—and the first time it will go to an architect.
If there was ever a perfect curatorial pairing, Alain de Botton made it when he selected artist Grayson Perry to work with English architects Fashion Architecture Taste (FAT). Architecturally speaking, their so-called House for Essex is a “built story”—a shrine to an Essex woman named Julie who led a life as a rock chick and later a social worker, along the way marrying twice and finding happiness before being tragically killed by a curry delivery moped.
When hackers broke into Sony Pictures Entertainment’s email server in November 2014 and released stolen messages, the first stories to come out were Hollywood fodder. Monday night in the garden of Nolita’s Elizabeth Street Gallery, the New York–based arts organization BOFFO held its annual Narcissists’ Ball, a Spring benefit in support of art, fashion, and design. SHoP Architects was honored in the “Architecture” category, and Martino Stierli, Philip Johnson Chief Curator of Architecture and Design at the Museum of Modern Art, gave a speech to acknowledge their work.
Former president and artistic director of Creative Time, Anne Pasternak, has been appointed the director of the Brooklyn Museum, replacing outgoing director Arnold L. Lehman, who has served the museum since 1997. Pasternak, who built Creative Time into one of the world’s leading art organizations, will continue Lehman’s publicly-engaged mission going forward, bringing her own take on public art and programming and the “other ways that artists want to contribute to public ideas,” as she put it in a 2013 interview with Paper Magazine.
An experimental exhibition titled “Cumulus: An Interactive Exhibition of Light and Sound” will open on Monday May 18, at the RAB Gallery in Chelsea. Created by the studio SOFTlab, the installation is inspired by the “complex geometries and deliberate yet erratic behavior of lighting” and intends to replicate “naturally occurring optical effects using both LED lighting and digital technology.” The exhibit runs through July 3rd but on May 18, the exhibit’s curator Karen Bookatz will interrogate SOFTlab’s Michael Szivos and she promises spirits and great views on RAB’s’s roof top for all in attendance. The High Museum of Art in Atlanta sought to restore vibrancy to its campus, part of the Woodruff Arts Center, with a series of violently colorful 3D structures inspired by spinning tops.
