Henry Urbach, Director of the Philip Johnson Glass House in New Canaan, Connecticut, since 2012, has left the National Trust Historic site. Urbach came to the house from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. He departed that job in 2011, in part to pursue a research project on the Johnson house, which he classified as “as a laboratory for curatorial experimentation.”
Gaetano Pesce is a designer who works between art and architecture and wants his designs to attack or argue against the results of standardized commercial design. He uses poetry, sometimes humor, color, and texture (in foam, resin, and urethane ) to create whimsical chairs, couches, and domestic art for gallery spaces.
Political action and its relationship to the printed page is the subject of an afternoon event at Columbia University on Friday, March 27, at 12:00 p.m. Three young architecture historians—Samuel Johnson, Simon Sadler, Meredith TenHoor—will present their research on artists, architects, and other creatives who use the printed page as a platform to advance positions in both thought and design. A new online text, Black Lives Matter, launched on March 10th on the architecture history and theory website Aggregate. The idea was created and edited by Meredith Tenhoor and Jonathan Massey and attempts, they claim, to “put architectural history and urban research in service of the Black Lives Matter movement.” The essays in the online journal aim to explain the architectural and urban origins of the present crisis in this country. Further, they analyze how architecture and urban research can help us find ways out of the predicament, and explore how to develop black aesthetics in architecture.

New York City is losing the 1931 Aluminaire House and its relocating to Palm Spring, California. The aluminum alloy and steel structure was created by the architect Albert Frey and A. Lawrence Kocher, managing editor of Architecture Record, and was commissioned by the Architecture League for the Allied Arts and Industry exhibition.
Architects may not get much respect in most American cities, but in Palm Spring, California they’re stars!
Today Richard Neutra who designed the city’s famous Miller House in 1937 and, ten years later, the Kaufmann House will have a star dedicated in his honor on the sidewalk of Palm Canyon Drive just in front of the Palm Springs Architecture Museum.
