The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Wahington D.C., designed by SOM in 1974, is undeniably striking in its design—the distinctively cylinder shaped structure is unlike anything else in the city. In 2009 Richard Koshalek, director of the modern and contemporary art museum, in a bold effort to place the museum at the forefront of our nation’s cultural institutions, came up with a radical new plan that would make the building stand out even more among the countries’ leading museums and significantly augment the city’s arts culture. Koshalek proposed his new vision for a 15-story inflatable balloon, designed by Diller Scofidio & Renfro, that would bubble out of the donut-shaped museum’s central courtyard twice a year. The project, dubbed the “Seasonal Inflatable Structure,” would serve as a unique space for installations and performances.
The National Medal of Arts, conferred by the National Endowment for the Arts and presented by the President of the United States, is the highest honor an American artist or arts patron can receive. For twenty-seven years the prestigious award has recognized the importance of the arts and expressed the nations appreciation for the boundless creative expression of America’s artists. This year it was bestowed upon renowned landscape architect, Laurie Olin—most notably known for his 1988 transformation of New York City’s Bryant Park.

Through his presentation Yeang will examine the principles of green architecture and will discuss several topics in ecological design, including the green building as a “living system,” the vegetated facade, and the facade as a “linear park.”
Gary Handel of Handel Architects will deliver the afternoon Keynote Address in which he will explore the history of the development of glass facades and identify future advances in facade technology.

In this workshop Parker and Tawresey will explore the sometimes-overlooked but very essential aspect of building a modern façade: structural performance. The pair will discuss the building codes, industry standards, and performance criteria that must be met in order to effectively construct a successful modern high-performance façade.

Since it’s founding in 1982 Kreysler & Associates has excelled as a leader in the development of molding and application of composites for construction and architectural uses.
In this very hands-on workshop Kreysler and Zabel will delve into an in-depth exploration of composite materials, which Bill Kreysler defines as “engineered or naturally occurring materials made from two or more constituent materials with significantly different physical or chemical properties which remain separate and distinct at the macroscopic or microscopic scale within the finished structure.” The full-day workshop will focus specifically on using composite materials in the creation of high-performance facade designs.
Participants will not only earn 8 LU AIA CE credits but they will also get the chance to design their very own FRP shapes and develop the creative and technical knowledge necessary to design and prototype composite based building components. It’s difficult to envision New York Cities’ bustling streets without the herds of yellow taxicabs and mammoth express busses whizzing past in a race to catch the next green light.
