The Shortlist> Top Five Competitions of the Week

Are you eager to put your architectural design skills to the test?  Here are some exciting upcoming competitions that will be sure to present you with the type of challenge you’ve been waiting for. AN‘s editors have combed through our online listing of architecture and design competitions to bring you five of the most interesting competitions happening right now. If you’d like your competition to be included in the listing, please submit it here.

Skin Digital Fabrication Competition. TEX-FAB has launched the 2013 SKIN Competition. The international, two-stage digital fabrication competition invites architect, designers, and researchers to rethink the building envelope and boldly explore performative qualities of a facade. Participants are free to select any context of their choosing, real or virtual, at any scale and on any building type. In phase one of the competition four winners will be awarded a $1,000 stipend used towards the development of their design. The winning proposal will be built at scale with fabrication sponsorship by Zahner Co, will win $1,000  and will be exhibited in Austin, Texas for the TEX-FAB 5 event in February 2014.

Waterfront Gateway Design Competition. The City of New Rochelle, a walkable city of single-family homes and high-density apartments in the downtown area, is sponsoring the Waterfront Gateway Design Competition for an abandoned 2.92-acre site home to a circa 1931 military armory. The competition seeks innovative design and planning proposals for the underutilized site and its two adjacent parcels. The jury will look for an entry that understands the pivotal nature of the site and its potential for the area’s rejuvenation. Finalists will each be awarded a $5,000 stipend to further their designs.

Revolve Detroit. Once a luxury shopping and musical destination, Detroit’s Avenue of Fashion on Livernois Avenue now requires revitalization. REVOLVE, a collaborative program of the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation that partners with community leaders, building owners, and artists, seeks to activate vacant storefronts with high-quality, long-term businesses and art installations through the use of “pop-ups.” REVOLVE was recently awarded $200,000 from Artplace America and $50,000 from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation to support these efforts.

Constructed Realities 2013. A design awards program of AIA San Francisco, Constructed Realities is a biennial competition that recognizes exemplary projects in a wide range of architectural work. Firms of any size are encouraged to submit projects of various scale and scope. Award categories include Architecture – Small Projects, Architectural Detail, Restaurant Design and Social Impact Design. IDP Candidates can redeem up to 40 hours per area and winning entrants will be featured in an AIASF exhibition.

Fenn Young Designers Award 2013.  In celebrating excellence in creativity and innovation in the design world, Fenn Young Designers Award (FYDA) seeks projects such as buildings, interiors, landscaping, urban projects, fine art and furniture to show how the library can be re-imagined and re-engineered. Since learning processes are constantly changing, the library must be reworked to accommodate the new generation of learners. FYDA will award cash prizes to the top three entries. The jury will also select 10 Honorable Mentions.
