Designing Recovery. AIA, Architecture for Humanity, Make It Right Foundation, and the St. Bernard Project are sponsoring a residential design competition that will substantially impact the lives of families who have been affected by disaster. The competition solicits high quality, affordable housing designs to reduce damaged caused by natural disasters. Three cities (Queens, NY; Joplin, MO; and New Orleans, LA) have been chosen as the settings for the competition. $10,000 will be awarded to one design for each location, and the goal is to utilize as many entries as possible to construct affordable housing.

Design, Make, Display. AIA and the Architectural Foundation of Cincinnati (AFI) have announced an architectural model competition and exhibit to show how the architectural model is an evolving art form that continues to be a significant system of representation of architectural design. While many designers have stopped using traditional physical models and switched to digital representation, this exhibition seeks to include both hand-built models and ones that incorporate digital technology. The models will be chosen from a public call. A jury of AFC and AIA Cincinnati members will then select entries to be exhibited at AFI in the Fall.

SukkahPDX. The Oregon Jewish Museum (OJM), the Pacific Northwest’s only Jewish museum, invites designers and artists of any background to create contemporary responses to the typical challenges of designing a sukkah, a temporary dwelling constructed each fall in observance of the Jewish holiday of Sukkot. Jewish texts provide complex parameters for sukkah design and construction, and the winning designs will be installed and displayed at OJM throughout Sukkot 2013. Selected entries will each receive a $400 budget to create and install a freestanding and self-supporting sukkah that will serve as the focal point of a weeklong series of events.

Tamarac Bench Design. Tamarac, Florida has a strong and dedicated community spirit. The Tamarac Public Art Committe is searching for a professional artist, designer, or team to develop a unique standard design for a covered and uncovered public bench. The bench must be durable, hurricane resistant, low maintenance, and affordable. The selected entry will be produced and placed throughout public spaces in the city, and up to ten covered benches may be installed in the new Maitland Park next summer. A contract for up to $60,000 may be offered to the designer for production, delivery, and installation.

5th Advanced Architecture Contest. The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia and Hewlett-Packard are searching for architects, engineers, planners, and designers who want to contribute to making the world more habitable through submitting ideas that respond to challenges such as ecology, architecture, and urban planning. Entries should envision what the city and habitat of the 21st century will look like. Prizes will be awarded for outstanding proposals at any scale and for any city that analyze the theme of Self-Sufficient Habitats. Three teams leaders will receive cash prizes totaling 50,000 EUR and a one-year grant to take the Master in Advanced Architecture at IAAC.
