Norway Gets Fresh

Norway Gets Fresh

While Denmark, Sweden, and even Finland may better known as leaders in design, in recent years the small family-owned Norwegian company LK Hjelle has been working with the collaborative Norway Says to produce innovative contemporary furniture that should be better known in the US. The company, best known for its more traditional upholstered furniture, has embraced contemporary designs, both for seating and tables, that are practical and well made with a fresh, lighthearted sensibility.

Ideally placed in pairs, the Duo sofa (above) has panels built into the back and the sides that can be flipped to create high backed, booth-like seating. Borrowing from the Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec’s Alcove sofa for Vitra, Duo has a simpler, studier design, with zippers that allow the sofas to be converted from low-backed to high, maintaining their profile.

The modular Ugo sofa system comes in one and two armed and chaise versions, which can be grouped to create seating “landscapes.”

The Day and Twin tables are small enough to be easy moved and can be grouped to create a larger surfaces. The Day table can be pulled right up to the edge of a sofa so the top extends over the seat (pictured here with a component of the Ugo sofa system).

The Twin table, which looks very small as a single piece, can be clustered to create dozens of configurations. Even in large groups, Twin looks delicate.

Hjelle is also branching out and working with new designers, including France’s Inga Sempe. You can see more of at 100% Design in London, September 24 through 27.
